Paws for the Future

Currently the New Zealand Kennel Club is developing a youth wing, to be known as The Young Kennel Club, for all young people between the ages of 5 and 20.

We are working closely with The Kennel Club, modelling our scheme on the hugely successful YKC in The United Kingdom.

The Junior Handler Extravaganza, held recently in Blenheim, was a huge success and a great example of how we can encourage our junior members. Planning is well underway for a second event to be held at Ardmore on the 14/15 January 2006
An Executive council sub-committee has been established and the protocols, rules and programme manual are currently being written. It is envisaged that a YKC national council will be formed with support networks across the country. A number of avenues for funding to assist this process are being investigated. The inaugural gathering at The ProPlan National Dog show in Christchurch was well attended and resulted in interesting discussion and very positive support for the YKC programme.

Research into overseas programmes, shows that involving our young members more fully in all canine activities, will have benefits for them and for the Kennel club as a whole.
Planning is also underway to involve more of our juniors at national level. Regional heats in obedience, agility and conformation classes will encourage more participation by young people and provide them with new goals to strive for. It could be fair to say that YKC will pay a big part in at The ProPlan National in Manawatu in 2006.

It is heartening to see the enthusiasm for YKC from our junior members, general membership, the Executive Council and our business partner, Nestle, Purina Petcare to support the development and education of our junior members.
